Human Design Authority: How You're Designed to Make Decisions

In Human Design, your authority is your body's reliable decision-making mechanism. It is never the mind. The mind is brilliant at processing information, analyzing patterns, and communicating with others, but it was not designed to make decisions about your own life. Your authority is a somatic intelligence, a physical signal that tells you what is correct for you before the mind has time to rationalize, overthink, or talk you out of it.

There are seven authority types in Human Design, determined by which centers are defined in your chart and in what hierarchy they fall. Your authority is second only to your type in practical importance. If you only ever learn two things from Human Design, let them be your strategy and your authority.

Emotional Authority (Solar Plexus)

~50% of the population | Defined Solar Plexus Center

If your Solar Plexus center is defined, you have Emotional Authority regardless of what other centers are defined. The Solar Plexus always wins the hierarchy. This means you are designed to ride your emotional wave before making decisions. There is no truth in the now for you. Clarity comes over time, as you experience the full spectrum of your wave from hope and enthusiasm to doubt and melancholy and back again.

Practical Guidance

• Never decide in the peak or valley. When you feel euphoric about something, that is not clarity. When you feel dread, that is also not clarity. Wait until the wave flattens.
• Sleep on it. At minimum. For major decisions (career, relationships, housing), give yourself days or even weeks. Urgency is almost never real.
• Track your wave. Notice your emotional pattern. Some people cycle fast (hours), others slow (days). Learn your rhythm so you know when you are approaching center.
• The feeling that remains. After multiple cycles, if you still feel a pull toward something despite seeing it from both the high and the low, you have your clarity. It is a "knowing" underneath the emotional noise.

Sacral Authority

Generators & Manifesting Generators without defined Solar Plexus

Sacral Authority is available to Generators and Manifesting Generators who do not have a defined Solar Plexus. The Sacral center is a gut-level motor that responds to life in the moment with either expansion (yes) or contraction (no). Unlike Emotional Authority, Sacral Authority is immediate. The truth is in the now.

Practical Guidance

• Frame decisions as yes/no questions. The Sacral responds best to binary prompts. Instead of "What should I do?" ask "Do I want to do X?" and notice the gut response.
• Listen for the sounds. Many Sacral beings make literal sounds: "mmhmm" (yes) or a flat "mm-mm" (no). These are not thoughts; they are visceral reactions.
• Honor the response immediately. The Sacral does not explain itself. If it says no, respect it even when the mind protests with reasons why you "should."
• Have someone ask you questions. If you have lost touch with your Sacral response, have a trusted person ask you simple yes/no questions and notice what happens in your belly before you think of an answer.

Splenic Authority

Projectors & Manifestors with defined Spleen, no defined Solar Plexus or Sacral (for Projectors)

The Spleen is the body's oldest awareness center, governing intuition, immune response, and survival instincts. Splenic Authority speaks once, softly, in the moment. It does not repeat itself. It is a spontaneous knowing that something is healthy or unhealthy, safe or unsafe, correct or incorrect for you right now. It operates at the speed of instinct.

Practical Guidance

• Trust the first hit. The Splenic awareness arrives as a quiet, body-level knowing in the instant of encounter. If you feel a subtle "no" meeting someone, that is your authority speaking.
• Do not rationalize it away. The mind will immediately produce reasons why you should ignore the intuitive signal. The Spleen does not justify itself. It simply alerts.
• It is about wellbeing. Splenic Authority is fundamentally about what is healthy and life-affirming for you. It operates through attraction and repulsion at a cellular level.
• Practice in low-stakes situations. Notice the subtle Splenic signals when choosing what to eat, which route to walk, or whether to accept a casual invitation. Build trust with small decisions first.

Ego Authority (Heart/Will)

Manifestors & Projectors with defined Heart Center, no higher authority defined

Ego Authority comes from the Heart/Will center and operates through willpower and self-interest. This is rare and only appears in certain Manifestors (Ego Manifested) and Projectors (Ego Projected). For those with this authority, correct decisions are made by asking: "What do I want? What is in it for me? Do I have the will and energy to commit to this?"

Practical Guidance

• Self-interest is correct for you. This can feel uncomfortable in a culture that prizes selflessness, but your mechanism is designed to operate from what you genuinely want and can commit to.
• Only make promises you can keep. The Heart center operates through deals and commitments. If you overcommit, you deplete your willpower. Only say yes when you genuinely have the will to follow through.
• Listen to your voice (Ego Manifested). Manifestors with Ego Authority often hear their truth in their own declarations. When you say "I want this," notice if the words carry genuine force or if they sound hollow.
• Rest and recover. The Heart center works in bursts, not continuously. Honor the need for rest between periods of willful exertion.

Self-Projected Authority

Projectors with G Center connected to Throat, no Emotional/Sacral/Splenic/Ego defined

Self-Projected Authority belongs exclusively to certain Projectors who have a defined G Center (identity) connected directly to the Throat. Their truth comes through their own voice. They literally need to hear themselves talk to know what is correct. This is not about thinking out loud. It is about the G Center's identity and direction expressing itself through speech, and the Projector recognizing their own truth in the sound and feeling of their words.

Practical Guidance

• Talk it out. Find a trusted person who can listen without advising. Speak about the decision and notice how your body feels as you describe each option. Your clarity is in the speaking, not in their response.
• Notice resonance vs. flatness. When you speak your truth, it has a quality of aliveness, energy, and resonance. When you speak something that is not correct for you, your voice may go flat or your words feel forced.
• Record yourself. If no sounding board is available, voice-record your thoughts and play them back. You will often hear your own truth clearly in the recording.

Mental (Environmental) Authority

Projectors with only Head and Ajna defined (no motors, no Sacral, no Spleen, no G-to-Throat)

Mental Authority (sometimes called Environmental or Sounding Board Authority) is the rarest inner authority for Projectors. These individuals have no body-based authority at all, as their only defined centers are in the head (Head and/or Ajna). Their decision-making process relies on discussing with trusted others and being in the correct physical environment. They find clarity through dialogue, not through internal signals.

Practical Guidance

• Cultivate sounding boards. You need 2-3 trusted people you can process with. Their job is not to advise you but to reflect back what they hear and ask clarifying questions.
• Pay attention to environment. Notice where you feel clear vs. confused. Certain physical spaces, temperatures, and atmospheres will enhance your clarity. Make important decisions in those places.
• Your mind is not your enemy. Unlike most types, your mental processing is actually part of your decision tool, but only when externalized through conversation, not when looping internally.
• Time and space. Give yourself room to process over days. The clarity emerges through multiple conversations and environmental shifts, not through one decisive moment.

Lunar Authority

Reflectors only | No defined centers | Wait a full 28-day lunar cycle

Lunar Authority belongs exclusively to Reflectors. With no defined centers, Reflectors have no consistent internal authority to point to. Instead, they are designed to use the Moon's 28-day transit through all 64 gates as their decision-making clock. Each day, the Moon temporarily defines different parts of their chart, giving them access to different perspectives and energies. After a full cycle, they have experienced the decision from every possible angle their chart allows.

Practical Guidance

• Journal daily. During the 28-day period, write down how you feel about the decision each day. By the end of the cycle, patterns of clarity will emerge from the data.
• Talk to the Moon. Not literally, but track the Moon's transit through your chart. Notice which days bring expansion and which bring doubt. Learn your personal lunar rhythm.
• Protect your process. Do not let others pressure you into deciding faster. 28 days is your timeline. People who cannot respect that are not aligned with you.
• For small decisions. The full cycle applies to major life choices. For daily matters, lean on which environments and people make you feel most like yourself. Your clarity about the small things comes from being in the right place.

The Authority Hierarchy

Your authority is determined by a fixed hierarchy. If your Solar Plexus is defined, you have Emotional Authority regardless of anything else. If not, your Sacral is checked next. Then Spleen, then Heart, then Self-Projected (G to Throat), then Mental/Environmental, and finally Lunar for those with nothing defined. You only have one authority. It does not change. Learning to trust it is the core experiment of Human Design.
